2023 Student to Leadership Development Program Highlights

Through the ASRT Student Leadership Development Program, two Michigan Radiologic Technology students were selected to represent our state at the annual ASRT House of Delegates Meeting and Educational Symposium. The conference was held in June in Reno, NV this year.

Leah Vandecar, a second year student at Oakland University had this to say about her experience: "I learned so much from this conference! I was able to sit in the House during governance and truly experience what it is like as they proceed with the business required. I became educated on what the new shielding position by the ASRT is and was able to listen to what other people at other facilities do, and compare it to what my everyday practices are. I went to the military chapter meeting and absolutely loved it! I didn't know the military had such a large presence in the profession, and I think that they may have persuaded me into that career path as a possibility for me. I also went to the RA chapter meeting and learned what the profession actually is and does, but also what schools are available and what that path would be like as well. My favorite memory from the conference would be the Installation of Officers on the last night. We got to watch the new President get installed and there was a beautiful flag ceremony including Old Glory and a tear-jerking speech from a veteran."

Sarah Nyquist, a first year student at Oakland University had this to say about her experience: "The conference was a blast and I learned so much! To begin, I learned the importance of advocacy and outreach. The ASRT is searching for new ways to reach technologists who are just starting out in the field and will be able to represent them for years to come. It is part of our duty as SLDP participants to persuade our colleagues to research the ASRT and all it can offer outside of continuing education. They offer research opportunities, scholarships, events, leadership positions, volunteer work, and so much more! All registered technologists should take advantage of these opportunities not only for their benefit but for the growth and betterment of the field itself. Secondly, my eyes were opened to the responsibilities of a state affiliate delegate. Their voices are imperative to the improvement of our practice standards, position standards, etc. Both of our Michigan delegates, Cindy Kramer and LeShel Palmer, exemplified professionalism throughout the duration of the meeting and encouraged healthy discussion with myself and my SLDP partner about their personal decisions as well as alternative views on proposed motions. Aside from all I've learned, I believe my favorite memory from the conference was the President's Reception. There, the delegates, leaders, SLDP, and most other guests were able to converse and reflect on all the conference had to offer. Personally, I had the chance to speak with the Speaker of the House and the President of the ARRT. There are so many other valuable takeaways from this conference, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of something so special."

If you'd like to be a part of next year's cohort and have an experience like Leah and Sarah’s, applications for the Student Leadership Development Program are now open!!
